Notes: Frances McNamara returns with the second title in her Nutshell Murder Mystery Series, Three-Decker Murder in a Nutshell. This time our sleuth Frances Glessner Lee (based on the real-life “mother of forensic science”) and her colleagues at the North Grove Street morgue are investigating a death in East Boston. Set in late 1919, the mystery takes place in the aftermath of the infamous Boston Police Strike. Frances will discuss her new book, writing historical fiction, and the research behind the Nutshell Murder Mystery Series. We will also be joined by Joanne Riley of UMass Boston’s Joseph P. Healey Library and a director of the 1919 Police Strike Project, which seeks to preserve the life stories of the strikers. Frances and Joanne will chat with us about the fun and challenges of local history and their experiences telling the stories of Bostonians touched by the strike. Enjoy a conversation with Frances and Joanne, plus pick up your signed copy of Frances’ new book. Attendees also have the option to briefly tour the museum before the program to get in the 1919 spirit.

Notes: In honor of Women’s History Month and the 145th birthday of Frances Glessner Lee, we are pleased to present our annual exploration of her fascinating Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. Lee achieved national and international recognition for her pioneering work in forensic science, creating the Nutshell Studies to train police and medical examiners how to investigate a scene of unexplained death. This year’s event is very special. The talented team in the theater department at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside has recreated one of Lee’s Nutshell Studies at full scale. “Dark Bathroom” depicts the demise of Maggie Wilson in the bathroom of the boarding house in which she resided. Was her death somehow connected to her gentlemen callers she had the night before she was found, or was it a tragic accident after too much drinking? Walk through the scene yourself, looking for clues, and then compare notes with your fellow “detectives” to try and determine - was it an accident, natural causes, suicide . . . or murder?? We will also have the scale model reproduction of Lee’s “Unpapered Bedroom” on display, created for us in 2022 by Drew Munao. Author Frances McNamara will join us to discuss her newest historical novel, Molasses Murder in a Nutshell, in which Frances Glessner Lee is a central character. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Birthday cake and Prosecco will be served.
